24 September 1872 — Angoulême
Tuesday. 24th [September 1872]. A very nice clean & comfortable hotel. Henry, Lord S. & I got up early & went to the cathedral. The walk to it along the ramparts is very pretty. The cathedral is fine in Romanesque style—but inside it is cold & whitewashed. The tower over the chancel is curious—but we could not see it much as service was going on. We went back to breakfast & started immediately afterwards for Bayonne. Sorry to leave Angoulême which is a pleasant clean bright town & has some pretty buildings in it besides the cathedral. We got to Bayonne in time for dinner & had very nice rooms at the St Etienne.
