15 November 1872 — Madrid
Friday. 15th [November 1872]. Mr Haggart, the attaché who is to replace Mr Goschen arrived from England bringing bags in wh there were some books &c for me but nothing from my family as a token of their esteem & confidence– The old King of Oude however sent Henry a very pretty aigrette of turquoins set in silver wh was acceptable to me– I spent the morning mostly arranging & putting away things. After lunch I went to see the Russian Ambss Mme Koudriaffsky– Found her still laid up in her bedroom on the sofa– She has a very pretty room with a Portuguese bed & blue velvet steps to get up to it! I then went to the Fuente & then picked up Henry who had been walking! I then went to Gardeners & had a tooth finished off—left some cards & then went to see Mme Dragonetti & Henry went & wrote his name on the list at the Palace. It appears H.M. is no better– Mme D. told me how the King had angrily dismissed one of his Drs it appears that he being one of the Royal Physicians sent word to know if the K wd like to see him– H.M. answered when he did, he would send for him– This Dr was furious & dreadfully jealous of Carreter & who was attending H.M. & when he was sent for for the eldest Prince refused to go &c The child was left 2 days without advice– The Q. having been entirely with the K—only found this out after 2 days when she went to the nursery & went & told the K. who was furious & had the Dr dismissed.
