16 December 1872 — Madrid
Monday. 16th December [1872]. Felt rather knocked up & so I stayed in bed all the morning to rest for this evening—& got up after lunch when I arranged my boudoir &c. We dined in the study (next the boudoir) & dressed afterwards. We had our first ball this winter. I wore a new dress from Paris light blue silk en train with an apron of pink silk & old Flanders lace—roses & diamonds. A good many people came but not so many as I expected & I found out that there was an alarm of a disturbance in the town which kept away a good many ladies. We kept up till after 2 & I was in bed by 3.
