18 December 1872 — Madrid
Wednesday. 18th [December 1872]. Received a note from one of the Whytes to say Mr Whyte is dangerously ill & asking for wine. I got up late & put off going to breakfast with the Dss till tomorrow. Directly after lunch Henry & I went out driving to call on Riaños & at the Retiro got out & took our walk. It was a lovely day & quite hot walking. On the way home I went to the Dragonettis. Found the Ct & Css de Oncien there—they are here on their wedding tour & she is painfully shy. He accompanied the King on his first arrival here & said he had been at our house. Dragonetti tells me that Ruiz Gomez, Gosselt & Cordova have given their resignations on acct of the proposed Puerto Rico reforms. I chatted with them some time & then went home to tea– Ffrench came to see us & gave a long account of poor Mr Whyte’s illness—it appears there is little hope—it being pulmonia & homeopathically treated. Brehm came this morning & lanced the footman’s foot & says it will soon get well. Mrs Sickles sent us the opera box & we went to hear Dinorah. The Hunts joined us & Messrs Sey & Hag: also Underdown. They all sang badly their voices were tired & flat–
