26 December 1872 — Madrid
Thursday. 26th [December 1872]. Henry & I went out walking & went to call on the Riaños but did not find them so we went to the Recolletos & walked about & then took a cab to come home. Los Sres de Mentaberry called & he told us that politics were looking very black & Serrano was abandoning the King. Runès also came in & was very downcast. He is only passing thro’ on his way to Andalusia. The Ct & Css de Oncien called. We dined with the Belgian charge d’affairs the Jooris & met the Sickles’, Tollevilles & Tetuans. To my horror Jooris took me in first & left the Dss de Tetuan last. I sat by the Marquis de Tolleville—a very bad dinner & boring to the extreme.
