18 January 1873 — Madrid
Saturday. 18th [January 1873]. Mme Valera called in the afternoon in the hope of getting her children invited to my Tree next week– The Dss de la Torre also came to ask me if I would go with her tomorrow to the Dss of Fernan Nuñez ball as people were gossiping about our quarrel & we wd show them we were friends so I agreed. We dined early & went to the Bauers box at the Opera to see Sasse in L’africaine– It was for her benefit. Meyerbeer had chosen her to play the part in Paris when it first came out. Let us hope she was young & slim & looked her part better than tonight—for she was revolting tonight enormously stout & unwieldy & with a head dress of feathers, blackened eyelids & darkened complexion it would be impossible to imagine anything so frightful as her appearance. She did not either sing particularly well– The theatre was crowded & she was immensely applauded.
