25 February 1873 — Madrid
Tuesday. 25th [February 1873]. Messenger arrived. All still quiet & the Cortès being suspended till Thursday the Carnival alone engrossed peoples’ attention & politics are put on one side– This being the case I ventured out driving again with Clarita, her niece & Mme Palmaroli at 3½ & had a very nice afternoon. I found my yesterday’s masked friend to be Mr Gordon. Henry went to the Prado on horseback. There were immense crowds in the streets all making merry as tho’ there were no such things as revolutions. After dinner we went to Bouillés’ last Tuesday “at home” & took the Ayltons with us but left them with Mme Mendes Leal to go home. I hear that the Dss de la Torre left yesterday for Bayonne with the children.
