25 April 1873 — Madrid
Friday. 25th April [1873]. Albareda breakfasted with us & then sat in my boudoir while I wrote till lunch. Abt 3½ came Mme & Bernadine Aylton to see me & then Mme de Canitz & at 4½ we all went out. At the door we met Grau who told us that he had met some descamisados dragging cannons in the Arenal & making some Artillery officers cry “Viva la republica Federal” wh made us hesitate abt going out however we went. I took Luisa & Mme Aylton & left the latter at Mme Montijos & then we joined Aurelia & Bernadine at the Prado & we walked together up to the Fuente– After walking some time I left them & came home. On the way, down the Alcala there seemed to be great agitation & at the house of Maxin the tailor was a guard of reds & a crowd. I remembered that Serrano’ mother in law lived in the same house & made sure that they were searching for him. There were also a great many reds at the Ministerio de Hacienda & I was glad to get home. I found Henry in from his ride & we went to see what was giving. It turned out as I expected they were searching for Serrano—& 2 companies of reds were quarelling who should mount guard at the Hacienda. Later in the evening they brought news that an attempt was being made to get the Federal Republic proclaimed & that the mob had got cannons on the 1st floor of the Gobernacion—which turned out to be untrue. Henry got a telegram at dinner time to enquire from the Queen whether we were safe– At 9 a gentleman arrived to ask Henry whether he might send Serrano here. He said that S. was hidden in his house (a Sr Ibarra) in the Barrio Salamanca. That all the houses were being visited that Castelar had warned him to come to us & that if he was caught he would not answer for his life. We of course told him to come & it was settled he should arrive at 1. tonight. I went to bed but Henry & Albareda waited for him & at 1. he came in a carriage with Castelar (the Minister of State) & Estebanez (the Govr of Madrid) & then all went to bed–
