26 April 1873 — Madrid | |
Saturday. 26th April [1873]. At 4½ this morning Giovanni came to wake us saying that Castelar & Estebanez had brought a gentleman to seek refuge here—Sr Becura by name & he was waiting down at the Porteria. We told Giovanni to take him in & put him in a spare room in the next floor which is next to Hills & we went to sleep again. It appears that he had 2oc been taken by the reds & this time had been set at liberty by Srs Castelar & Estebanez who brought him here on foot wrapped in cappas– I moved my writing things into the back drawing room & gave up my boudoir to the refugees. At lunch time Rancès called to see Serrano. Grau came to ask if we cd send Lady Franklin’s copy to England– At 4½ we went out riding when Henry came back from a visit to Bouillé. We found it very cold & unpleasant out. We met Vernouillet on his “jument [illegible word]” but did not stay out long. We all dined together & had a pretty cheerful dinner. I made Mr Becura’s acquaintance this evening—he is a curious kind of man with a kind of bulldog look—if he had not white hands one would think he was a gamekeeper. We were all glad to go to bed early. | |
