1 May 1873 — Santander | |
Thursday. 1st May [1873]. Mr Saint Martin was charged with care of the Consulate during Mr March’s absence & on hearing what was the object of our sudden visit to Santander promised to help us. There were a great many ill looking people when we arrived at the station but we plucked up courage & I walked in with Serrano taking his arm. I wanted in my haste to bundle him into the carriage first but he wd not saying “Ce n’est pas convenible”. I wished he wd forget his politeness but jumped in to avoid further delay. We drove straight to Saint Martin’s house where we left Serrano & went ourselves to the Fonda del Comercio & I laid down to rest—but in vain, anxiety prevented this—& at 6 we dined & went to the Saint Martin’s where we found Serrano in high spirits. Henry had secured for him a small tug steamer wh was to take him in 14 hours to Saint Jean de Luz– In the train Serrano had thrown away his little false whiskers & now he said he had got most of the dye out of his hair & when he had washed his head the water had been like ink—all this amused him very much & he was very merry with Mme Saint Martin & her two lively daughters– We asked Serrano to let Mirecki accompany him wh he at once accede to & at 8½ the steamer was ready & being dark we left Mr Saint Martin’s house & went across the quay to the steamer begging them to start at once– However there was a delay of 5 minutes– Serrano wanted to say goodbye again—wanted a pillow &c—this made us dreadfully anxious & at last I thought all was over when 5 guardias walked up to ask what was going on who was going &c. I said to Hill come away my legs shake & I cannot stop to see him taken at the last minute. However Henry explained that he was sending a messenger & the guardias went off & the steamer started. As we saw the lights of the steamer going further our minds got easier & we went to the hotel & slept well. | |
