3 May 1873 — Santander
Saturday. 3rd [May 1873]. I drew in the morning from the window of our room & we took a walk in the town & poked abt in all the small streets & lunched & at 1½ & then went for a drive with M & Mme Saint Martin, they took us to the Sardinero wh is a nice little bathing place with little villas—a casino, ball room—2 or 3 hotels. The great man of the place is a Marquis del Pombo, having got his title from King Amadeo– He showed us the bathing place, the Casino &c—all is still shut up & only open on 1st June when the season begins. The Saint Martins told us abt the King’s visit to Santander & how he had been slighted & insulted as much as possible, how he had been made to get out of his carriage & walked under false pretences. How he had been put into a room that had been painted only that very morn &c. We dined at 8 & I read aloud to Henry till bed time.
