10 June 1873 — Madrid
Tuesday. 10th [June 1873]. Worked hard at Miss Bentley’s gown. Henry & I took a walk in the afternoon– It was very cold. We went round to the Cortès but found that nothing was going on so we went to a Prenderia & then to the Plaza Mayor to see where the Reds had torn the old iron crown off the Panadero & pulled out the stones of the Constitution. We saw on Sunday 3 men trying to pull down the Crown off the house opposite us– Luckily it was too solid & defied their efforts. In the evening we went to see Barba Ojul at Riva’s Circus having stalls– Sr Figueras had disappeared from Madrid—run away!
