18 June 1873 — Madrid
Wednesday. 18th [June 1873]. I worked away at the screen work all the morng intending to finish it before we leave on Monday but all my plans had a sad blow. Henry got a telegram from Lord Granville telling him him not to leave yet so we must put off our journey. At 4 Emilia Riaño & her Juanito came & at ½ past 4 we set off to drive to the Pardo a hunting seat of the Kings of Spain distant abt a league. It was a very pleasant day—the sun hot but a pleasant breeze. We got to the Pardo in 1½ hours—alighted near the Palace & when in to see the tapestry which lines all the state rooms. They are chiefly of Madrid manufacture are Goya’s drawings—there are some flemish & a little Goblin. The Palace is surrounded by a ditch at its base planted with trees. There still remain a few old ceilings painted by Italians wh are remnants of the old palace built by Charles V. After seeing the palace we found out a place to eat our fruit & biscuits & watched 800 francos being drilled. The palace keeper said they were all galligos “very good quiet people”—which is not the usual character of the francos. It was pleasant & cool (almost cold) driving home. We got home to dinner soon after 8. I was tired & had a headache & went early to bed–
