29 June 1873 — Bayonne
Sunday. 29th June [1873]. Mr & Mrs Graham came to see us in the morng but at 12 we started off in an open carriage to Biarritz to call on the Serranos. We found them living at the Villa Dumont. It was very hot. The Dss was in a loose white dressing gown. We sat on the terrace & had “sirop.” They sent to tell Albareda who was breakfasting with the Duke of Irias to come & see us wh he did having the inevitable cigar in his mouth. We sat & chatted till abt 4 when we proposed to leave them as we wanted to call on Mme Prim. They begged us to return & dine with them so we went to Mme Prim’s & found her being on the road between Bayonne & Biarritz. She told us what an escape she had had of Sta Cruz who let her pass not knowing who she was & when he afterwards found out said he would have Juanito for a hostage. We went back to Biarritz & took a walk with Serrano by the shore, coming back to Serrano’s house we met Mr Lilburn of Madrid & also Scipion Murillo– We were a good many at dinner & a tight fit the rooms being small. In the eveng Mlle Ochoa came in. We sat in the garden & they began to play Lots—we had to start for Bayonne so took leave of them. There were several showers in the afternoon wh made it quite cool.
