30 June 1873 — Bayonne | |
Monday. 30th [June 1873]. Capt. Burneby came to call & said he had come from Madrid by train to Victoria. Then he got a carriage as far as Alsasua where the Carlists forbid it to go further so he hired 2 men to carry his luggage. One of the men was soon knocked up & so Capt. B. had to shoulder one of his own portmanteaux. When they arrived at a Carlist outpost the Carlist chief in command was immensely astonished at a man who was travelling on foot for his own amusement. When they laughed at him he told them he saw no fun & they wd not laugh if they had to carry their own luggage. They invited him to take some wine & he went on till he got a carriage & arrived safely at Bayonne. Mr Graham came to take leave of us & we started for Paris by the 1 train. Serrano, Genl Lopez Dominguez, Sr Chinchilla, Albareda & Marquis Ahumada came from Biarritz to see us off. At Bordeaux Consul Hunt met us & got us a coupé & we went on & arrived at Paris at 6 o’cl on | |
