9 July 1873 — London | |
Wednesday. 9th [July 1873]. I had a headache & had to lie down all day. It was rather a hot day. We dined with the George Glyns. I sat next to Monty & was taken in by Mr Childers. There was a drum afterwards & the Hungarian band played. I heard for the 1st time this band wh is the rage in London this year—the men are dressed in dark blue uniforms with red pipings & hessian boots. They cannot speak a word of any other language but their own. They play violins &c & everything by heart, & one man plays an instrument called a Zimbali. He strikes the strings with 2 small kind of drumsticks. | |
