17 July 1873 — London
Thursday. 17th [July 1873]. Henry went down to Osborne by an early train to see the Q. I woke with a headache so I stayed in bed all day. Monty came & sat with me & we roared together over Sir C. Grandison & “his fine Byron.” Maria came also for a little while & also Connie came to take leave of us as she goes to Pr Eliot tonight. She sat talking to me a long time abt her difficulties & squabbles with Mary Ponsonby. I got up for dinner & we dined with the Drakes, met the Tom Bruces, Ld Hayward & his daughter, the Alfred Seymours– I sat between Sir Wm & Mr Rate. We then went to the Apsley House Ball & saw a great many people there & the P. of Wales was there.
