18 July 1873 — London | |
Friday. 18th July [1873]. Henry & I went to luncheon with the Dean & Lady A. Stanley & they took us over Westr Abbey. We went to see the waxwork figures wh are kept in the Abbey—there is one of Charles II, Elizabeth &c all in the original costumes & some had splendid lace ruffles. It has always been the custom to have a wax figure of the defunct K. or Q. carried at their funerals—the earlier ones have perished but the Dean opened a chamber of horrors & showed us the remnants of the earlier figures—forms without clothes &c. I especially noticed one whose only clothing was a pair of white silk stockings. In the afternoon I went out leaving cards with Mrs Rate. We dined with Mrs Grote. Met Mr & Mrs Henry Reeves, Sir J. Lacaita. Mrs Grote is wonderfully well—but does not talk as much as she used & after dinner laid up on the sofa all the eveng. However she was very kind & affectionate to me. | |
