23 July 1873 — London | |
Wednesday. 23rd [July 1873]. Henry & I went off to Osborne to dine & sleep. We left by 12.45 train to Southampton & took the steamer to West Cowes. There we got a fly & drove to the Ferry & went across & got up to Osborne between 5 & 6. We had tea in our sitting room & the Dss of Roxboro’ who was in waiting on the Q. came to pay us a visit & told us that she was going out driving with the Q & that we might take a walk in the grounds. As soon as we heard the carriage drive off we went out. It was a perfect evening & had been very hot. The country looked lovely & the glimpses of the sea made it very pretty. There are very pretty open galleries to the house & as the day was so bright it gave me quite Italy. At ½ past 8 the Dss of Roxboro’ called for me to take us to dinner. We went down to a drawing room & Mr Cardwell joined us & then sat waiting till abt ¼ to 9 when the door opened & we stood close to it. The Q. appeared & shook hands with us & then went into dinner followed by the Pss Louise, P. Leopold & Lord Leven. The table was round & on each side of the Q. sat Pss Louise & Ld Leven & I next to Ld L. Genl Ponsonby was also there. We were abt an hour at dinner & the conversation was general. I wore my Nineveh necklace wh was admired & the bracelet passed round for inspection. The Q was much amused by Henry’s chaffing Cardwell by saying he had seen Cardwell get excited in the House & get on a bench to cheer wh C. would not allow to be true. After dinner the Q. came & talked to me abt Spain & Amadeo & Serrano for some time then to Cardwell & then we all went & walked on the terrace. Abt 11 the Q. retired & we went & sat with the household. Henry played whist with P. Leopold, the Dss & Genl Ponsonby & I talked to the maids of honour Miss Catheart & Miss Cavendish & then we went to bed. | |
