6 August 1873 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Wednesday. 6th [August 1873]. Mrs Burr took us to an old house called “Upton” now a farm house—a delightful old house with 7 gables wh had belonged to Perkins the last of whom died 80 years ago. It has a fine old barn—a good avenue traces of gardens & 7 fish ponds– There are old garrets & places to hide people in them used in the time of the Commonwealth. The Gambeir Parrys, Tom Taylors, , Mr Jenkinson & Mr Hubbard came to stay at Aldermaston. After dinner it was fine & moonlight & we sat out on the terrace.
