20 October 1873 — Madrid
Monday. 20th [October 1873]. I took Clarita out driving abt 4 we left cards. Henry went out walking tho’ not very well & has a cold. The usual whist party in the evening. Brehm came & brought a Dutch baron who was very nervous & absurd– In sitting down he said “I am quite strange to you”—& smiled– By & bye at tea he drew forward a chair & said “I suppose I may make myself quite at home.” I asked him to sing & he regretted he had not his music but sat down & strummed a doz bars of an air of Stabat Mater & then turned to me & said “You know that.” On my saying “lovely” thinking it was a prelude to his performance he repeated those few bars & was quite contented. Mr Hunt sang & the whist continued till late. Henry had shivering fit which shows he had fever–
