27 October 1873 — Madrid
Monday. 27th [October 1873]. Rose late– Boxes arrived from England via Cadiz wh left England 2 days after we did. We had a great arranging & unpacking. In the afternoon I took Clarita for a drive. Whist in the evening & a few men came– Mr Hunt sang. Brehm brought a Dutch Baron Leigelaar who was supposed to be musical & who contented himself with strumming a few bars out of Stabat Mater—he spoke most extraordinary English & French & I could hardly understand his German better.
