2 November 1873 — Madrid
Sunday. 2nd November [1873]. I went to church in the morning & took Miss Sickles. Mrs Sickles met us coming out. Mr Adee & Mr Haggart were there. It rained as we came home & the afternoon was very wet & dark. We had a visit from Genl Serrano, who as a sign of mourning wore black woolen gloves– He seemed very low about the state of things & said that Castelar ought to send the brothers Cincha—one to the North & the other against Cartagena. Derings, Adee, Maffei, Nicholas &c dined with us–
