4 November 1873 — Madrid
Tuesday. 4th [November 1873]. A very wet day & we could not go out so I worked all day. The Bauers arrived this morning from Santander. Mme Aylton & the girls called on us—played a game of backgammon with Henry & then dressed for dinner & dined with the Sickles. I sat between Sickles & Maffei. The dinner was bad—everything very salt—& long– There was a deal of plate & grandeur & nastiness. It was supposed to be only a family dinner for Mrs Sickles fête. As we came home there was a white fog. Sickles left home when we went away saying that Castelar had sent for him & he must go & see what he wanted. It would thus appear that Sickles is the real President here–
