5 November 1873 — Madrid
Wednesday. 5th November [1873]. Got up with rather a headache but Henry proposed that we should go to the Bernars to see Rios Rosas funeral pass by so we walked there. Found all the Carrera S. Geronimo kept by soldiers as far as the Cortès & up the Calle Alcala to the Ch: of San José where the body lay in state. After waiting a long time the procession began to arrive but the hearse was only just in sight when the whole thing stopped for about 20 minutes & afterwards went on to the Cortès where a crown was to have been laid on the coffin but we learnt afterwards that it was not done as the crown was not ready– The coffin was followed by the Ministers, Academics & the members of the Cortés, a deputation from the Senate & some regiments of soldiers—all of whom were recruits who could not march in step– We found out afterwards that the delay was caused by a squabble wh took place between Castelar & the Cortès. They presented a protest begging that Genl Pavia might be removed from being Capt Genl of Madrid as he had insulted them by putting them in the wrong place & by not ordering the soldiers to present arms to them as the sovereign Cortès. It appears that Pavia was reported to have said that not a red cap should be seen in the streets wh further incensed them. We returned abt 3 & I was obliged to lie down—went to bed at 6.
