2 January 1874 — Madrid
Friday. 2nd January [1874]. I wrote a long letter to Ffrench & in the afternoon altho’ the weather was lovely I did not go out & there were few people about in the streets & no carriages. We lunched early & Henry went to the opening of the Cortès. I wrote to Mme Ettling & Mme de Martino. Abt 5 the 4 Serrano children walked in said the Dss had gone to fetch Parco from school & would return– She soon came & at the same time Henry. They said that things looked bad but Castelar had sent for Serrano & said that he was very assurado that Serrano had gone in uniform & with ADC—that all was settled that Serrano should act with the Radicals when a message came from the artillery that if he joined with Martos they would not stand to their guns. Altogether things looked bad– The Riaños came & dined & with the Dss & children we were 10. The Riaños left soon after dinner & the Dss Cn went to bed. We had our usual music, they played a trio of Rubinsteins, Mirecki violincello; Espino violin; Quesada piano—& then one of Beethoven’s with Beck at Piano. Inzenga, Pedrorena, Maffei & Mme Canitz only came & we finished early. The Cortès was adjourned from 7 to 9 so there was nothing settled when we went to bed–
