1 January 1874 — Madrid
Thursday. 1st January 1874. As the servants had danced till nearly six this morng we were all a little late. Juanito Riaño came at 10½ with a message & we were still at breakfast. Inzenga gave me my lesson—went out driving with Henry directly after lunch & we took a turn in the Retiro so I came home early while Henry walked home. Maffei called. We asked him to dine. The Dss de la Torre called to tell us that things looked very black for tomorrow & she seemed much alarmed. After dinner we went to the Serranos & took Maffei with us. Found a great many people & Serrano looking very anxious. We arranged that the Dss should send the children to me tomorrow in case of need. Had a headache & was glad to get to bed.
