18 January 1874 — Madrid
Sunday. 18th [January 1874]. I did not go to church my cold being bad & we gave up the quartett concert on account of the heat & crowd. After lunch we took a walk & went to the Bauers who were out & then to the Canitz whom we found—but she had fever & was seeming ill. We walked home. Mr Sopwith called having arrived this morng from the S. 8 hours late—at 2 instead of 6. AM. The train had been stopped & robbed once on the Lisbon line & once on Andalusian line before he joined it. He goes to England tomorrow. Maffei, Ruiz Gomez, Nicholas &c dined with us & we sent them away early & went to Countess Montijo. Found her very well but her granddaughter Mlle d’Alba was there looking very ill. She had been laid up & is out for the first time tonight. The house was fearfully hot & I came away with a racking headache.
