20 January 1874 — Madrid
Tuesday. 20th [January 1874]. Copied a short secret despatch to go by messenger who is start this evening if the road is clear as the Carlists have cut the Santander line in 4 places. Esquivel came & set my drawing ready in the smoking (now painting) room & tomorrow I am to begin to learn to paint in oils. Damp day & did not go out. Duchess of Ahumada called & later Emilia & Mme Saavedra & we had a clothes confab– I read to Henry a little after dinner. The messenger did not start after the line not yet being clear.
