25 January 1874 — Madrid
Sunday. 25th [January 1874]. I went to church with Hill & when I came home I had to copy for Henry as Mr Haggard was gone out hunting. After lunch we took a walk & it was lovely when we started. Went to the Koudriaffsky’s & did not see them & then round by the Puerta del Sol & before we got there the weather had changed & it got cold & dusty & windy. We went to the Sickles & paid our Sunday visit. Met there Aurelie Maffei &c when we came away it was raining so we got into the Canitz carriage to return. The Bauers, Bojanos, Llorente, Silvela & Pavia dined with us. Pavia took me to dinner & I had Llorente on the other side. Mr OConnor arrived this morning from England & we asked him to dine so we were 13 at dinner. Pavia talked a great deal abt his coup d’etat & was delighted with the picture of himself in this weeks Punch. Like all Spaniards he is very vain of his performance on 3rd & liked to talk abt it. It appears he gave a second detailed account of it in the smoking room.
