20 February 1874 — Madrid
Friday. 20th [February 1874]. It was rather a windy day. I was engaged to take Emilia out but I put her off till tomorrow & went out for a little walk with Henry. We went to the Sickles to say goodbye as we hear they start for London on Sunday. Found her sitting for her portrait wh is a horrid daub, the house upside down & packing going. They have put off their departure till Tuesday. We went afterwards to call on the Bauers but they were out & we took a little turn by the Calle de Estudios to see if the old woman there has any antiquities worth buying. On our return Mme Bauer came to see me. Henry dined at 7 with Genl Rojas the Minister of Venezuela. It was a banquet given in honor of Sickles & at the end of dinner Rojas read a poem to him in wh he said that as Sickles was carrying away the most lovely flower of Spain he ought in exchange to leave the loveliest flower of America. I went to dine with the Serranos at ½ past 7. Found the Dss reading & with her a cousin Mme Chinchilla. We waited for a long time for Serrano who was at the Council of Ministers & at last the Dss sent an ADC to call him. The ADC said Serrano was coming but that the Consys was “muy revoltoso” & that the Minister of War had not attended it. At 8¼ as Serrano still did not come his boy Parco was sent for him & he came at last & we were just going in to dinner when the Ministers called for him. On his return we rushed in to dinner as Serrano & I went thro’ the passage we met all the Ministers coming out of the council room & they had all to stand back in a row to let us pass & I had only time to nod to them as they stood hat in hand. Serrano showed me a telegram giving a few of the names of our new Govt in England. Ld Derby being Minister of F.A. At 10 Henry fetched me & we went to the Canitz for a little while. We have had no posts since Tuesday.
