8 April 1874 — Gibraltar
Wednesday. 8th [April 1874]. At ½ past 10 I mounted a donkey & Henry & Mr de Winton horses & we went up the rock to see the galleries & after seeing these wonderful places hewn out of the solid rock with their enormous guns we went up to the signal station where we dismounted & rested. The view from here is lovely but today it was very misty out at sea. We looked at the monkey book which has an entry made of each time any are seen & remarks as to what they are doing. Mr Munroe the head man told us that he had seen the monkeys carrying about a dead one—& that they will approach any soldiers but fly at the sight of a civilian. Mr M. gave those who wished it beer & then we set off to return to the convent walking down some of the worst part & got home just in time for 2 o’clock luncheon. Afterwards Henry & I went out in a Victoria to leave cards as we had a good many to return & returned about 5 when we had tea in the garden & I drew making a sketch of the house—when it got too late. I went up onto the Genl’s platform with Henry to see the sunset. I sang in the evening. I am enquiring for a parrot to buy—they have brought me a grey one who seems very stupid–
