20 May 1874 — Madrid
Wednesday. 20th [May 1874]. I wrote some letters & painted all the morning & in the afternoon till Maffei called and then Mme de Vernouillet & Mme de Canitz– They stayed a long time & at last Vernouillet himself came to talk to Henry. I had appointed to go out with Emilia so I begged Mme V. to come with me while I dressed as Aurelie was gone & it was ½ past 5 before I could fetch Emilia. We went & fetched Mariquilla & went shopping together & to the Palma Alta for some plants & were only just back in time for dinner. In the evening we went to the Presidencia and afterwards to Mme Montijo’s—found her being read to by Nava del Tajo & 2 ladies sitting by them came in a Sra Tenorio & a Sra Collantes & after a little talk we went home.
