20 August 1874 — Venice
Thursday. 20th [August 1874]. As soon as we returned from the Lido I went & dressed & we started off for Mme Marcello’s house. There we met her & a Burano boat provided by Signor Fambri which was to take us to Burano to see the lace schools & one other Italian gentleman went with us. The weather was threatening but it kept fine. We took about 2 hours to get to Burano with 4 rowers. We were met by the mayor &c & a dense crowd of women & children. The men being chiefly fishermen were probably out in their boats. We went to the town hall where were ranged round a room the lace makers—in gala costume & there were many pretty faces. We looked at every thing & admired– Had refreshments handed & went to see another school where children of 2 & 3 years old are employed in making nets & then took leave. We eat sandwiches on the way back to Venice where we got abt 4 & then went to pay Mr Brown a visit.
