23 August 1874 — Venice
Sunday. 23rd [August 1874]. Idita’s grandpapa was worse & she cd not come & bathe. At 3 went out painting with Henry at S. Trovaso. After dinner we went in the gondola to meet the Viennese singers who were going to have a grand serenade & began from near the station. We met them near Brown’s house & let them pass us. Then we took a short cut thro’ the small canals & came in front of them again near the Rialto. Just as they were getting there large drops of rain began to fall & a thunderstorm began wh dispersed a great many of the gondolas. We went to Palazzo Bolbi which Guggenheim had offered us for shelter. It soon cleared & we went out again keeping in front of the Serenade. It was getting late so we went home & got a glass of wine & then we went to the Royal Palace from whence to hear the singing in the Piazza. There was a dense crowd & as soon as the Viennese procession appeared there was great cheering. They struggled thro’ the crowd to the platform created for them & at that moment the storm began again & heavy rain– However it did not last & the crowd did not seem to mind it. The singing was very fine especially one song with accompaniment of of horns. We sat in the same window as Prince & Pss Clary & her daughter Mme de Roubillac. We saw Mme Marcello also & went home late & tired.
