24 August 1874 — Venice | |
Monday. 24th [August 1874]. The news of Sir Wm Perry was bad we went to bathe without Idita. I was bathing with Toni the master & the tide was very high & strong so that I had to cling to a post & cd not easily get off again & cut my hands with barnacles. However I got to the bank & we were swimming quietly when all of a sudden we saw a woman screaming & plunging half way between the bank & shore– Toni dashed off to her & the boat came & Toni held her up till it arrived & saved her from drowning. It appeared that she had swum out of her depth without knowing it & in trying to stand got frightened. I had rather a difficulty in getting back the tide was running so strong. It frightened us all very much. Mr Malcolm came after breakfast to take us to see the Alvisi house almost next to our hotel wh is to be sold. He told us Sir Wm had died this morning. In the afternoon I went & painted at San Trovaso with my old master. Mr Brown called on us. | |
