11 September 1874 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Friday. 11th September [1874]. I painted in the morning. At 12.30 we set out with Alice to drive to Wotton to see the Evelyns. On the road met a messenger with a note to put us off as Mrs E’s sister was ill so we drove on straight to Mr Lewison Gowers where we lunched. We met there the Thomson Hankeys, Lord & Lady Cardwell, Miss Boyle, Sir James Lacaita. We stayed some time walking in the garden & then went on to Mrs Grotes—on the road we met Lady Eastlake carriage & Sir Wm Boxall in it, & they afterwards joined us at Mrs Grotes. We had a long drive back to Milton wh we reached abt 7.
