14 September 1874 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 14th [September 1874]. Left Milton & went up to town to lunch. The De Martinos lunched with us, & we went off afterwards to Aldermaston by the 3.15 train. Mrs Burr met us on the road to the station. It was cold & I was glad of a fire in my bed room– While we were at Aldermaston the Squire was away but Mr & Mrs Hegford & Arthur were at home. They let out the great pond whilst we were there in order to make repairs– An immense quantity of fish were taken perch—siluria & 2 tortoises. One day we went over to Silchester to see the digging. A pavement with wooden supports—& another gateway to the town had been discovered. The Joyces came over to dine & sleep at Aldermaston & Car Churchill came to stay 2 nights. I painted fruit in Mrs Burr’s study.
