28 September 1874 — Bordeaux
Monday. 28th [September 1874]. We started early from Bordeaux & at the station found Mariquilla & M. Saavedra & travelled to Bayonne with them where we arrived at abt 12. We went to the St Etienne where we had ordered rooms. Mr Graham met us– He leaves Bayonne for Pau tomorrow being no longer consul there where he had been for 30 years. The captain of the “Fly” which was to take us to Santander, Capt Bruce called & advised us to start at once on our journey as the weather was so fine but was likely to change. So we agreed to be ready at 5. I took a walk with the Riaños in the town & we bought D. Carlos’ postage stamps & we returned & dined at 4 & then went on board but it was pouring a sudden thunderstorm having come on. At last we started abt 5.30 & had a splendid passage. Emilia & I sat all the evening on the captain’s bridge & even had tea & toast up there. The captain had given us up his cabin & there were beds for Emilia, Hill & me. I slept like a top & woke just as we were nearing Santander. I found Emilia was sick & had to fly on deck with Hill. The captain had given passage to Baron Morpurgo (Mme Bauer’s father) & to a tall fair burly man who called himself Sir G. Forth & said he had no passport or luggage but was in a hurry to reach Madrid to see a dying sister. He seemed pretty merry considering & sang half the night to the delight of the officers. We found the Capt Bruce was a nephew of Lord Aberdares. When we got into Santander harbour on
