29 September 1874 — Santander
Tuesday. 29th September [1874]. we were kept waiting abt an hour for the quarantine boat & Captn Bruce getting angry fired two guns. We landed abt 10 & went to the Fonda Americano wh we found somewhat cleaner than the old “Comerico.” We dressed & breakfasted & then took a drive to the Sardinero, went into the Pinewoods & boiled my little kettle & made tea getting milk & bread from a farm near & then drove home– Mr Ross one of the Fly officers & Capt. Bruce dined with us & while we were at dinner Mariquilla & Mr S came & sat with us & screamed & talked. Just as were going to bed then came the Govr of the place to call on us telling us what we were not expected to believe that he had only that moment heard of our arrival by a telegram fm Madrid!!
