30 September 1874 — Santander
Wednesday. 30th [September 1874]. We breakfasted at 11. & the Saint Martins called while we were at breakfast. At 12.50 we went to the Station in a carriage with Mr Saint Martin. We had a saloon carriage & Count Chaudordy who also arrived this morning in the “Chamois” had another saloon. The Riaños & Saavedras had a compartment next to us. We & the French had a separate dinner at Reinosa—& in the evening I boiled my kettle, made tea & invited in the Riaños & Saavedras. At every station there were troops drawn up & the commanders made speeches to the 2 ambassadors. In fact all thro’ the night after we had settled down to sleep Henry had to get up at the large stations & received Governors &c &c. At Avila there was breakfast but I preferred to make my tea & gave Emilia some.
