24 December 1874 — Madrid
Thursday. 24th [December 1874]. Before I was up I had a lot of letters brought me–there had been none from France for 15 days—& it was a great pleasure when it did come. We had the letters in 3 installments during the course of the day—9 Times & 11 Galignanis. Esquivel gave me lesson– Mme Bauer called also Mariquilla to say she was in mourning & cd not go to the theatre tonight so we gave it up. Went out for a walk with Henry. After dinner I left Henry with his papers & went round to Mme Greindl’s to see the Christmas tree– Met there the Ayltons, Hatzfeldt, Ludolf & Van den Bosch. The tree was successful. I had lent some Chinese lanterns wh were hung up across the room– one, towards the end of the evening took fire– I tore up the carpet & it fell harmless to the ground—but another caught fire wh Ct Ludolf tore down with great presence of mind. I came home abt 11– Lovely night but great noise & drummings in the streets.
