25 December 1874 — Madrid
Friday. [25th December 1874]. Christmas Day. Found a thick fog on awakening– I & Henry took a walk & went to see Emilia who sent us word Mr Riaños mother was dying from a stroke 2 days after he reached there. Put up flowers & greens. Hatzfeldt called– We had the Ayltons, Ruiz Gomez, Cushing, Adye, Tyng, Fitch, Rutledge, Mirecki, Mr Hunt & Maffei to dinner & afterwards the Hamiltons & Mr Jameson & Miss Clements (the Greindl governess) came & we played a round game of cards—then had punch & cake before they left–
