30 December 1874 — Madrid
Wednesday. 30th [December 1874]. Saw to the children & got out the picture books I had provided against a revolution– We all breakfasted at 11– Had a great flare up with Giovanni who gave warning & upset me. Dr Brehm came & found Ignacio going on well. Copied a letter for Henry– He & I took a drive for an hour. Went to see Emilia for a few minutes, left cards of Dss of Prim being the anniversary of Prim’s death took a turn in the Fuente & came home. Found the Dss here but she went away. Mme Bauer called also Hatzfeldt, then Ludolf—then Chaudordy till we had quite a diplomatic party. They had all come to talk over events. Later Maffei came– I then went up & played “theatres” with the children—& at 7 the Dss de la Torre came & said things looked so bad she thought it best to come & sleep here. Henry & I dined at 7.30 & then went up & sat with the Dss: At 9 Ruiz Gomez came & said if Primo de Rivera did not declare for Pce Alfonso all was safe. He & Henry went off to Bauers’. I to the Dss: One of the Secy of the Duke came abt 10 & said that the Ministers had resigned & gave their resignation into Primo de Rivira (Capt Genl of Madrid’s) hands who wd proclaim P. Alfonso tomorrow. I waited for Henry who came in with the same news & he sent me up again to the Dss who said she had seen another secy who told her Serrano had also resigned & Laserna was now the head of the army—& then I left her in bed at rest.
