3 January 1875 — Madrid
Sunday. 3rd [January 1875]. We had put an advertisement in the paper for the cat & at 10 Josefa came up to say it was found that some women had come to say they had a cat & poor Pepito appeared while we were at breakfast. In order not to encourage his being stolen we only gave 20do reward & Hill added a peseta. The women were furious & vowed that if they could catch him again they would kill him. We were just rejoicing over the cat when there was a cry of fire & the housekeepers room was found to be in flames. Giovanni was nearly stifled by the smoke but the fire was soon put out. It was found that a clean petticoat of mine had been left by Hill on the sofa. We suppose that the white kitten threw it down on to the fire as it was entirely consumed & the carpet & sofa in flames. In the afternoon Mr. Aylton called & then Henry & I went for a walk. We called on the Canelaux but were told she was out—then on the Koudriaffsky’s who were not in—then on the Greindl’s who were also out & then went home. We had Riuz Gomez, Chaudordy, Phipps, Maffei, Mr Gosling to dinner & afterwards went to Css Montijo’s. It was very crowded– I sat most of the time with Mme Bernar– We came home after 12.
