13 January 1875 — Madrid
Wednesday 13th [January 1875]. ] M. Koudriaffsky came & breakfasted with us at 11.30. I had rather a headache & did not do much all day. At 3.30 went to see Clarita who is still ill & then to the Prado to fetch Henry we went to see Signor Nicholas who is ill & only stayed there a few minutes. Then went on to see Chaudordy. Met there Koudriaffsky leaving also Pirel & the Canelaux. Chaudordy gave us tea & showed us the embroideries he has bought wh are magnificent. At 6 we went home. Maffei called & we kept him to dinner – After dinner Mr Hamilton called with Mr Gallenga who has just arrived from Valencia where he went to see the entry of the King. He says the K did not make the Virgin Capt. Genl but only offered to her his jewelled baton—the Bishop pooh poohed it but the K said it was all he had but he wd offer it. Henry & Maffei went to Bauers but I went to bed early.
