29 January 1875 — Madrid
Friday. 29th [January 1875]. Drew– Esquivel came. Before 11.30 breakfast I went to the dentist & then on to see the Dss de la Torre to take her a little cabinet I had had for her from Venice. I did not go out again copied for Henry. Messenger started this evening. I practised the harmonium. Mr & Mrs Jameson called. They are going to England next week for her confinement. In the eveng we went to the theatre of the Zarzuela to see the Barbarillo de Savassies” by Barbieri. The whole thing is Spanish but we did care much abt it. We were in Salamanca’s box & the Saavedras joined us there. We did not see the whole piece as Henry was tired & they put in a Panorama of the Cortest war before the last act. It was badly painted & very painful. One wonders the Spaniards could bear it while the civil war was still going on.
