7 February 1875 — Madrid
Sunday. 7th [February 1875]. Wrote in the morning. At 3 went out to Mrs Phipps & went for the first time into her house. It is a small appartment but comfortable. Took Mrs P. out driving & also B. Aylton & Mme Broutelles we went to the Prado to see the masquerade. As soon as we got near there 2 masks jumped on our carriage & one began to abuse the Dss de la Torre to me. Later another came near the carriage & said he had heard that I had quarrelled with her because I had sent her a bill for her expenses while she stayed with us. I was astonished & puzzled till Mrs P. explained that a story was going about to that effect. All the masks who spoke to me abused the Dss. We got home rather late as we found the Carrera so full we had to go round by the Calle Atocha to get into the Puerta del Sol & then I had to leave the people I had with me at their houses so I cd not go to Montijos. The messenger arrived at 10 this eveng from England.
