27 February 1875 — Madrid
Saturday. 27th February 1875. Got a good many letters from home & one from Blanche announcing her engagement to Edward Ponsonby wh took us by surprise. At 1 the Conde de Torre Blanca & the Marques de Selva Alegre (Gran Introductor de Embajadores) came for Henry with 2 of the Royal Carriages & took him to the Palace to present his letters of credence to the King who came in from the Pardo where he is staying. I copied out Henry’s speech for him to read. Louise Aylton came to see me & stayed till 3. It was a wet day off & on & I did not go out at all. Began my last strip of work for a screen. We dined at 7½ & then went to the Opera where the Bauers had given us their box to see “Othello” performed for the 1st time this season. It was very well done & Mme Penco & Tamberlick were much applauded. We took Louise to the opera with us.
