21 March 1875 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 21st [March 1875]. Palm Sunday. Grau came to fetch me to go to see some lace wh was on sale & belonged to the late Patriarch of the Indies. It turned out to be wretched stuff at enormous prices. Coming home we went into the church of the Encarnacion where service was going on. The church was darkened & each priest & a good many of the congregation had palms in their hands wh was very picturesque. The Passion was being read & in the middle there was a squeeky little voice wh I was told was to represent the voice of Judas as each priest took a different part in reading the Passion. We went to the Sunday concert & took Clarita. The King & the Infanta came there. We went away before the end but heard afterwards that when the King went out & the orchestra stopped to play the Royal March it was hissed. Marques d ’Assereta, Ruiz Gomez, Mrs Clarke, Ct Saint Genoirs [&] Major Hall dined. | |
